IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances, Inc.) recently released just 200 sets of their Speed Smelling™ Collection from 2014. Each year IFF invites a small group of French fragrance journalists to find out what the perfumers at IFF would do when they can create a fragrance when they have no brief and no budget restrictions. This event is called Speed Smelling™. Over the course of one hour, 11 perfumers must impress the jury with a creation that must surprise, seduce and be remembered. This event allows the perfumers to speak about their art and present their fragrances and allows the journalists to get to know the perfumers.

Inspired by a golden sculpture by Olafur Eliasson entitled The New Planet. In information taken from Grain de Musc: The tear-shaped drop (the sculpture) with its metallic and yellow facets called for citrus. In structuring her composition, Aliénor also sought to address the most basic issue of hesperidic accords: their fleetingness. It revolves around an AmberXtreme™ axis (think spiky woods on steroids) to conjure the metallic glint of the Eliasson piece. Its core is built with two citrusy long-lasting molecules, nootkatone – which smells of grapefruit and is contained both in grapefruit and vetiver, and khusinyl, reminiscent of rhubarb and the more citrusy aspect of vetiver. The overall effect is bracing, modernistic and non-linear: mission accomplished.
