Perfume Description

Russian Oud starts with traditionally distilled Thai oud that displays its wild, raw, deep nature right from the very beginning of this composition. At the top, it reveals caramelized oudiness and as soon as the scent travels towards the heart notes it meets Russian musks. Castoreum delivers a dirty leather aroma, while the fragrance of deer musk pod adds an animalic shadow to it as well as lending another layer of furry leather accord. This is all sweetened by rich cocoa extract from Indonesia and chocolaty Indian oud. According to Areej's website, the deer musk is a maceration derived from legally obtained, wild Siberian deer musk grains. These were sourced from a legal institution that buys only from registered hunters who have permission from the Russian government to hunt a regulated number of wild deer per season. Legal musk grains are available in very limited amounts and are typically used only for traditional medicines.

In the base notes you will find an atmosphere of incense-laden relaxation. The unique scent of guggul resin dominates the thick base with incensy, balsamic, honeyed sweetness. Birch tar and Sandal 100K, distilled by Russian Adam, add a touch of creamy smoke. A balanced combination of cedarwood, myrrh and labdanum wrap everything in a soft woody, ambery scent that lasts for hours, warming the wearer.

Russian Oud features top notes of multilayered Choco Borai oud oil distilled by Russian Adam; middle notes of Indian oud, Russian castoreum, cocoa extract and Siberian deer musk maceration derived from a gigantic musk pod; and base notes of guggul resinoid, Indian myrrh, labdanum, birch tar, sandalwood and cedarwood.

It is an extrait de parfum and 300 bottles were produced.

Excerpts from two reviews by Kafkaesque

Willy Wonka would probably have loved Areej Le Doré‘s new Russian Oud. The chocolate and candy magician in Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book was noted for transforming sweet items into something fun outside of its usual structure. The same can be said for Russian Oud which puts an oriental twist on the famed sweets factory or, to view it in a different light, takes Willy Wonka’s magic factory and places it firmly in the Orient. Imagine Willy’s river of chocolate, but now slash it through with caramel and treacly labdanum toffee and transport it to Ali Baba’s cave of oriental treasures. The cave lies deep in the heart of a Hindi oud mountain, its carved walls emitting gusts of black smoke and heavy brown muskiness. Willy Wonka’s gourmand river now runs alongside tall river beds made out of resinous, smoky red sandalwood and brown-red earthy patchouli, and is watched over by Oompa Loompas clad in birch tar leather, their skin orange from a thin patina of spices, and Ali Baba’s forty thieves clad in myrrh and more leather. Together, they stir the molten river of chocolate, toffee, and caramel with long paddles made out of creamy sandalwood, oud wood, and buttered oud calfskin, sending it down into the heart of the mountain where it finally winds its way into an ambered pool of caramel muskiness flecked with a pinch of cocoa.

Russian Adam summed up his latest oud to me as: “an oud perfume with a gourmand heart and incensy base built around high quality agarwood oil distilled by Russian Adam according to an old traditional way yet with a unique modern twist.” The initial note list that I was provided did not mention sandalwood (or birch tar), but Russian Oud had such a powerful sandalwood note at one stage that the scent bouquet was filled with it. In fact, it utterly turned my head with its absolutely gorgeous resinousness and smokiness. When I asked Adam he said that the fragrance contains a special distillation of his Santal 100K which he described as something like a “sandal tar, similar to birch wood.”

It’s utterly fantastic, especially at one point when it combines with other notes to create the effect of a molten river of lava flowing over your skin, lava made out of toffee’d amber, sandalwood, smoke, myrrh, and musky, quietly growling oud. It’s not just addictive, but damn sexy as well. My sister used to have an expression for things that blew her away and also had great sex appeal: she used to say, he or it “is like sex on a stick.” I’m pretty sure she would sum up Russian Oud as “sex on a stick.” And I would agree, except I think this is primarily a cozy comfort scent and delectable semi-gourmand. But wowzer nonetheless.

Bottom line: Russian Oud is olfactory crack to me, pure and simple.
