Perfume Description

Inspired by the magnetic, dangerous pull of the water. Fathom V takes its cue from Shakespearean dramas - The Tempest and Hamlet. It is a unisex fragrance created by Julie Marlowe featuring top notes of juniper berries, tangerine, black currant and green notes; middle notes of thyme, lily, jasmine, ylang-ylang, ginger, cumin, black pepper and mimosa; and base notes of patchouli, vetiver, moss, salty notes, frankincense, Atlas cedarwood and ambergris. Fathom is an aquatic fougere that is intensely green yet dark.

Fathom V was a finalist and the winner in the Independent category for an Art and Olfaction Awards. These awards are presented to just four perfumes and one experimental scent project a year. They are designed to raise public interest and awareness around new developments in independent perfumery. The awards are given to outstanding creators in the categories of independent, artisan and experimental perfume from across the globe.

From the award submission:

Broadly taking its inspiration from The Tempest (in which Shakespeare conjures images of violent weather, shipwrecks and magical islands), the chief theme of ‘Fathom V’ is the phrase ’Sea Change' gleaned from “Ariel’s Song” within the play. The eternally changing state of the sea - in constant flux between calm and wild - is our departure point here, explored though the use of seemingly contradictory raw materials in ‘overdosed’ concentrations: Salt meets earth, sparkling herbals blend with dark mosses, bright floral notes meet intense dark spices and pepper. In contrasting the above and below, light and shade, we imagine the shifting state of the sea: its intensity - the allure of its dark depths - challenging preconceptions of what ‘Aquatic’ truly means.

From Fragrantica:

Leo Crabtree: "Fathom is a term often used by sailors to calculate the depth of water. The idea behind this one was to challenge the concept of clean and neutral ‘aquatic’ fragrances and create something that resembles dark mysterious water rather than ‘clean’ blue water!!! So our perfumer Julie Marlowe (who signed the previous Beaufort London fragrances, namely Vi Et Armis, Tonnerre, and Lignum Vitae) combined aquatic notes with earthy ones, to create a paradox of ‘Above and Below’ - so on the surface the water seems smooth, but you don’t know what danger there is in the deep water you cannot see….

A fragrance for the intrepid: challenging preconceptions of what ‘Aquatic’ truly means..."

Fathom V is an eau de parfum, edp.
