Boy Smells Hinoki Fantome was released in 2021, the perfume based on the much-loved Hinoki Fantome candle. Combining sacred Japanese hinoki woods and spices, it has notes of cypress, black pepper, olibanum, tobacco leaves, orris, cedarwood, hinoki, fir balsam, patchoui, oakmoss, smoked leather, cypriol and cistus. This is a cologne de parfum.
Boy Smells' Cologne de Parfum line launched after the success of their candle line. Each of the fragrances take notes often considered masculine or feminine and blends them in ways that makes them complement each other and expands them into something more. Boy Smells has always played with contrast of gender but also the juxtaposition of dissimilar notes, taking things that should be dissonant and making them harmonious. Historically, fragrances have been strictly “for men” and “for women,” with everything from the campaigns to the bottles and the scents themselves being created within the strict confines of traditional gender roles. And while the past decade has seen brands evolving beyond gendering their scents, shirking the idea altogether and deeming its fragrances “genderless,” Boy Smells is taking a slightly different route. With the arrival of Cologne de Parfum, Boy Smells aims to embrace all parts of the gender spectrum with a phrase it coined, “genderful.”
From Byrdie - "The whole scent is very woody and earthy, but there's something more to it. It's deep and dark in the way that many woody scents are, though there's something light and sweet about it, too, that pulls it in the opposite direction.... I acknowledge that I am lucky to smell almost any fragrance I choose, and even if a scent isn't really for me, I can recognize that it's for someone. Hinoki Fantôme is just something else entirely. It's dark; it's ethereal, it's mysterious, it's amazing. It was undoubtedly my favorite fragrance of 2021, and it's a top contender on my best of 2022 list—and we're just getting started."
Reddit - "I have to say this is fast becoming one of my favorite fragrances. Mysterious, interesting, sensual. I hear what another poster is saying about it being a lesser version of Santal 33 or Tam Dao but I disagree, I feel the opposite is true. This is a bigger more complex version of those, and it really draws you in. I can’t stop going back to it."
