By Kilian Love and Tears is a part of the Collection L'oeuvre Noire (Black Masterpiece) and takes its inspiration from jasmine. While you would think this would be a sad, brooding jasmine, it is not, it is the beauty of love that comes with the tears, carrying green bright notes that make it sparkle. The jasmine is not heavily indolic. Daffodil provides a wee bit of leather to toughen up that heart, and then it all rests on a moss and woods base. Notes of bergamot, petitgrain, lavandin, galbanum, daffodil, Egyptian and Indian jasmines, lily of the valley, orange blossom, ylang, jasmine water, cedarwood, oakmoss and styrax.
Kilian Hennessy launched By Kilian in 2007. Yup, the Cognac Hennessy, grandson to the founder of Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton Group, he followed his interest in scent, writing his thesis on the semantics of odors. After spending time with leading perfumers, he launched By Kilian with the Collection L'oeuvre Noire (Black Masterpiece) series. There are now 10 fragrances in that series. The over-the-top marketing copy drew a lot of criticism in the early part of his launch, but the gorgeous packaging - black lacquer boxes and black bottles - started to win us over, as did the artistry of the fragrances.
By Kilian Love and Tears Reviews
Bois de Jasmin - "The initial impression of Love & Tears is that of sparkling, green brightness, the springtime sensation felt when one smells the new leaves, sticky buds and new grass. The lush jasmine note begins to unfold almost immediately, though it presents itself in layers. First, it is the apricot jam sweetness of jasmine absolute, then the jasmine takes on a soft, tender quality, and finally, a subtle leathery note peeks through the mass of white petals. "
Olfactoria's Travels - "What Love and Tears does to me, was very unexpected. I find myself basking in its light. For me Love and Tears has an almost visible glowing aura, I feel like I am in my own private ray of sunlight when wearing it. Like a halo, it surrounds me and bathes me in its white light. It softens contours, it makes my vision fuzzy and my outlook mellow and benevolent."
Fragrantica - "Love and Tears is a luminous, radiant jasmine soliflore to me. It opens slightly citrus tinged, adorned by green bright lily of the valley nuance and a tiny bit of indole rendering it natural and vivid. When these shimmering aspects gradually attenuate, Love and Tears becomes silky with a sort of lotion-like nuance of ylang ylang and tuberose. There is a galbanum and moss undertone keeping the jasmine grounded on the branch. Although the evolution of different nuances is detectable, Love and Tears is unmistakably an innocent, fresh jasmine. It's feminine, envelopping, yet non-demanding, airy and ethereal."
