Lata is named after Lata Mangeshkar, a famous Indian playback singer. She is one of the best-known and most respected playback singers in India. Her career started in 1942 and has spanned over seven decades.
The fragrance was released in October, 1999 and is no longer available. This scent came about when an Indian chemist and entrepreneur Deepak Ramrao Kanegaonkar became a perfume manufacturer. While discussing the perfume business, the subject of celebrity brands and perfumes named after film personalities came up. He felt that only a celebrity who had a consistent, steady and growing career graph should be selected and also there had to be a synergy between the characteristics of the product, the name of the celebrity and the personality. They also had to be actively involved in creating and promoting the brand. It was decided that Lata would be a good choice and since she also was a connoisseur of perfumes, especially high end ones, it made perfect sense. When Lata traveled and performed all over the world, she always made sure to buy one very special perfume to add to her collection.
Only four people worked on the project. They made 200 samples and shortlisted 20 of them with the help of Charles Caruso of SFA in Grasse, France. The perfume is made of 78 different essences and only the finest quality ingredients were used including Tamil Nadu sandalwood (Chandan in Hindi), which is the star of this fragrance. It was manufactured in Vapi, Gujarat and was designed to suit Indian tastes since it was intended primarily for domestic Indian distribution. Since Deepak was Indian and had an agreement with Tamil Nadu Forest Plantations, he was ensured of a steady supply of high purity, authentic sandalwood oil.
Lata features notes of sandalwood, spices, musk, jasmine, rose, vanilla, amber, oakmoss and patchouli. It is an eau de parfum, edp.
