Perfume Description

MadHat Scents is a great line of fragrances that I found through Basenotes. I originally purchased a couple of Ryan's scents just for myself but fell so in love that I wanted to share them with all of our customers! Ryan's mission is to create a unique fragrance experience for his customers while creating scents that cannot be found anywhere else. MadHat Scents began as a one man personal project to create scents that were not available in both niche and mainstream markets. Initially he had no intention of selling his fragrances - they were created just for himself and a few friends. After realizing the increasing demand for all things different, stemmed from an uprising in artisan perfume houses using high quality ingredients and increase in department store duplicates, he chose to make them available in limited releases. He creates 600ml batches of his scents (all extraits created at 30%) and when it is gone, it's gone!! They actually sell out in about two months. New fragrances are released shortly after they run out of a scent. Sometimes he may choose to release similar scents in the future depending on demand but they will all have a different dimension.

We are only offering samples on our website. This listing is for fragrances that were previously on his website but have sold out. Click here to be taken to the MadHat Scents site to purchase full bottles of his current scents. Unfortunately they do not ship internationally.

Choose from the following fragrances. Just put your choice in the box. If you would like more than one, put whatever number you would like in the quantity and the names in the box.

  • Americana Rust is the smell of warm tobacco curing in an old wooden barn in the southern rust belt. Americana Rust is a literal interpretation of cured tobacco coupled with warm woody notes, including guaiacwood. It features notes of tobacco absolute, black pepper, cade, oud, labdanum, frankincense, amyris, cedar, guaiacwood and sandalwood.
  • Engin is a smooth, resinous, creamy, aldehydic and slightly smoky scent. Engin uses aldehydes to highlight a large amount of benzoin styrax  coupled with star anise, black agar, creamy woods and an interesting oud blend. The full listing of notes is aldehydes, star anise, benzoin styrax, amber, oud, sandalwood, cedarwood, mahogany, frankincense, citrus, black pepper and birch tar.
  • Jour et la Nuit is Ryan's interpretation of an old-school animalic-chypre fragrance based on perfume blends from centuries ago. He consciously chose to leave out both patchouli and bergamot after reading that 17/18th century chypres were more resinous in nature.  He said call it an animalic-chypre or not, but it is his interpretation of what he thinks a chypre would have smelled like during the French revolution. He said if you were to stumble upon a dust covered perfume cask in a castle somewhere in France, this is how he pictures the fragrance smelling...mossy, warm-amber, slightly smokey, animalic and resinous. He added vintage civet tincture at the last minute and feels that the perfume really benefited from the addition. Vintage civet is much more smooth and animalic than the synthetic. Jour et la Nuit features notes of blood orange, vintage civet tincture, musk, leather, labdanum, woods, oakmoss and resins.
  • Khus - Ruh Khus is a type of vetiver from Northern India and is known as the "oil of tranquility". Sandalwood from India, Vanuatu and New Caledonia is used in the base notes of this scent  which pay homage to kalabham which is a type of sandalwood paste that is combined with other materials and applied to the skin in some Hindi religious rituals. Other Eastern inspired notes include a heavy dose of ginger, incense and geranium mixed with light rose. Other notes include ravensara and musk.
  • Lavhim is a beautiful combination of Grasse lavender and Somolian frankincense accented by warm, melting candle wax and crushed leaves from fresh greenery. The notes are lavender, incense, wax, clove, fir needle, cognac and green leaves.
  • Limed is a non-typical woody/citrus fragrance. Lime and ginger meets four different types of sandalwood (Vanuatu/Australian/New Caledonia/Mysore) along with coconut, frankincense,
  • cedar, citrus, vanilla, Roman chamomile and musk.
  • Oudhy - Ryan decided to create a fragrance that challenges the idea that the combination of rose and oud is over-done, a trend, mostly similar from brand to brand. Oud and myrrh can be extremely challenging. Add in a beastly-yet-powdery Musk de Gazelle, dried Ma'amool agarwood chips macerated in heated ethanol and a splash of thick, dark and sweet Moroccan and Egyptian rose oil to the mix and you've got Oudhy. Oudhy smells a bit like sweet sugared roses covered in bandaids; sun-drenched wood with witch's incense burning on top and oud smothered with velvety-red animal musk. Ryan said that this was by far the most challenging fragrance he has created to date but might just be what you've been looking for in a rose/oud fragrance. Oudhy features notes of Indian oud, musk, rose, New Caledonian sandalwood, Ma'amool agarwood, myrrh, Shamama attar, ravensara, Brazilian copaiba balsam, extremely dry woods, patchouli and various resins.
  • Peel (Limited Summer scent) - The notes in this fragrance are all things that Ryan cherishes and remembers from his childhood and summers in the Midwest. Tall corn stalks, a glass of orange juice after a long, hot baseball game, grass so freshly cut you can smell the dampness from last night's thunderstorm and crushed candy that lies on the hot curb from the local July 4th parade. The full listing of notes is orange, bergamot, grapefruit, pineapple, Haitian vetiver, cedar, sandalwood, amyris, cypress, lemongrass, juniper berry, birch leaf, fir needle, spearmint and elemi.
  • Royk - Røyk is a woody-incense fragrance that uses incense from both Eastern and Western cultures. From the Hinoki walls of Buddhist temples in the mountains of Japan to the frankincense-drenched Roman enclaves, It blends frankincense from these Eastern and Western cultures with sandalwood from India. Røyk starts out chilly and stark but warms up as it dries down with lightly balsamic, resinous undertones. It features notes of frankincense, elemi, benzoin, styrax, opoponax, labdanum, hinoki, cedar, southerwestern pinon, Piedmont colophony, Congo black coral and sandalwood.
  • Skiff - A small, sun-soaked wooden skiff heads out of a small oceanside town near Havana, Cuba. It's early in the morning and the air is still semi-cool and salty. You take a bite of fruit as you slowly cut through the inlet. The smell of flowers from a nearby blooming tree cross paths with the ocean's breeze. Skiff features notes of floral mukhallat, ambergris tincture, pineapple, berry, melon, Pacific red cedar, marine notes and sandalwood.

  1. Americana Rust 5 Star Review

Posted by on 11th Jul 2015

When I got the sample at first I smelled smoke and incense, upon comparing it with embers which by the way is an amazingly smoky woody campfire itself, I started to get the hay and woods, and recently I got the "rust", great fragrance very deep and my nose learned a lot, I truly have enjoyed the works put out by this house and look forward to trying as much as I can by them.
