Kind of Nasty
“Silk Stockings.” All I get is a strange, high pitched smell, with main notes of orris and civet. It’s very cold, metallic, and smells like salty fish.
Serge Lutens Bas de Soie was introduced in 2010 and inspired by silk stockings (the meaning of bas de soie). Using an unsual and great pairing of iris and hyacinth, this is edgy in ways that most iris scents are not. It won't work or appeal to everyone with the somewhat metallic feel, it softens, and becomes a little bit sinner and a little bit saint.
from cafleurebon - "The orris used in Bas de Soie is very high quality because as it takes its place next to the hyacinth it shows off a muscular floral aspect without any of the sharpness I often get from iris. The middle part of Bas de Soie is almost homage to the sharp metallic qualities of both hyacinth and iris. It is a figurative knife fight as both notes turn chilly and bear that familiar metallic tinge to them. Unlike in other fragrances where that metallic aspect appears in Bas de Soie I found it felt complementary and appropriate. For the last part of Bas de Soie the stage is given over to the iris as, its figurative sword sheathed, it is allowed to regain the warmth with which it first appeared. Along with the iris is a green muguet to echo the green aspects from the top which allows Bas de Soie to circle back to where this fragrant ballet began."
from perfumeposse - "Serge Lutens Bas de Soie is heavy orris out of the perfume gate, though early on you do get some of the hyacinth very early. I wouldn’t classify this anywhere near Iris Silver Mist, so don’t buy it thinking you’re getting ISM-Lite. ISM is much rootier, with a little spice. Bas de Soie is colder, metallic, a little soapy. There’s a cold softness to it. I think the silk stockings is pretty apt, it has an exterior that is smooth, beautiful, untouchable, but the longer I have it on, it takes on a slightly bent aspect that’s almost soft and loses some of that soapiness."
