Sonoma Scent Studio

Based in Sonoma County in northern California's wine country, Sonoma Scent Studio is owned by Laurie Erickson who is also the sole perfumer.  She grew up loving the flowers that her mother and grandmother grew in the garden and this sparked an interest in blending essential oils.  After earning degrees in natural science and doing perfume blending on the side, she established Sonoma Scent Studio in 2004 and quickly found that it required all of her attention.  She states that sourcing the best ingredients to use in her fragrances is one of the jobs that she enjoys most.  She has sampled and studied thousands of botanical essences, perfumery ingredients and perfumes from all over the world.

Fragrances in line – Boutique Collection: Fig Tree, Forest Walk, Incense Pure, Nostalgie, Rose Musc, Tabac Aurea, To Dream and Winter Woods.  Sonoma Exclusives:  Ambre Noir, Cameo, Champagne de Bois, Fireside Intense, Jour Ensoleille, Lieu de Reves, Sienna Musk, Velvet Rose, Vintage Rose, Voile de Violette and Wood Violet.  She also offers body products.

Her newest fragrance is Forest Walk.  Reminiscent of the scent of a forest floor, it features notes of black hemlock absolute, fir absolute, Western red cedar, oakwood absolute, galbanum resin, jasmine sambac absolute, violet, olibanum, labdanum absolute, natural oakmoss absolute, aged Indian patchouli, New Caledonia sandalwood, orris, benzoin and earthy notes.  The fragrance came about when Laurie was asked by Mandy Aftel of Aftelier Perfumes and Nathan Branch of the Nathan Branch blog to participate in one of their Letters To A Fellow Perfumer series.  This project gave her the opportunity to work with black hemlock absolute in a forest scent which was something that she had wanted to do for a long time.  The theme of the project would be the creation of a scent that included an ingredient that she had not used before.  The letters back and forth with Mandy Aftel on Nathan Branch's blog told the story of the creation of this fragrance and the process that Laurie goes through in creating a scent.  Her idea was to evoke the feeling and mood of a walk in the forest without being overly literal about it.  Read about it on the Nathan Branch blog.
