Perfume Description

Manufacturer:

Jergens

Fragrance Name:

Ben-Hur

Year Introduced:

1904

Gender:

Feminine

Strength:

Perfume

Notes:

Top note of ylang-ylang, middle note of rose and base note of tonka

The Andrew Jergens Company of Cincinnati developed a Ben-Hur line of toiletries in 1904. It was based on the title of a bestselling novel by Lew Wallace from 1880, a high-grossing Broadway production from 1898, and in the 1920s a silent movie. In an April 1926 issue of Photoplay magazine, the film's two female leads described the fragrance as being "delicate" and "exquisite".

Ben-Hur Perfume was very popular, inexpensive and made in the thousands, even soaps and a face powder were infused with the perfume and sold by Jergens. Other products include: colognes, toilet waters, sachets, talcum powders, bath salts, bath oils, body lotions, cleansing creams and personal deodorants.

For being an inexpensive fragrance found at five and dimes, Ben-Hur is really so beautiful! It is reminiscent of walking through a rose garden and I could only find three notes listed for this fragrance. A top note of ylang-ylang, a middle note of rose, and a base note of tonka. It is a somewhat sweet, musky fragrance that is really intriguing for what was more of a simple perfume.

Ben-Hur was found at stores like Woolworth but in my research I also found Ben-Hur Perfume sold in the Sears Catalog (until at least 1934) and the Montgomery Ward catalog (until at least 1929).

Interesting to note, is that Ben-Hur is part of the Smithsonian's collection of cosmetics and personal care products displayed at the National Museum of American History.

Ben-Hur has been discontinued.

This is the original perfume version of the fragrance.
