Ormonde Jayne Ta'if was launched in 2004, created by the line's owner and founder, Linda Pilkington. Ormonde Jayne Ta'if is inspired by the Ta'if rose, a rose grown in Arabic countries. Ormonde Jayne Ta'if starts out lighter than the notes would suggest, with a little date note, and then the saffron blows in, adding darkness and depth. It is sultry and elegant; a complex scent that lasts a long time and gets more interesting as the hours wear on, changing so much you never really get tired of it.
When Luca Turin reviewed Ormonde Jayne Ta'if, back when he had a blog, he used this quote from a Raymond Chandler book to describe Ormonde Jayne Ta'if:
Wear it, as Raymond Chandler said, when the desert wind blows, "one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge".
From Now Smell This - "Ta'if develops and deepens slowly over a period of some hours, and has excellent lasting power. It is, as advertised, sultry, but in a restrained, sophisticated way. It is by no means overpowering, and it will not announce your presence before you enter the room."
From Basenotes - "And what an elegant rose this is! The beauty lies in the way the Ta'if rose is presented and supported. It stays fresh yet deftly sidesteps the intensely green shrillness of tomato stems, with a dash of spices sustaining its peppery vibrancy. The ambery oriental base provides a more than adequate foundation but thanks to the perfumer's judgment, it remains subservient to the central floral accord even long into the dry down. Projection and longevity on skin are both excellent. Can a man wear Ta'If? Absolutely. But on the right woman, it could well be a weapon of mass seduction."
From Olfactoria's Travels - "A rich, warm, full rose accompanied by her adjutants jasmine and orange flower, she makes a round through the big hall to the delight of her jubilant underlings and then climbs the dais to sit down on the throne. Slowly she settles in and the music starts playing a quieter tune, the people in the hall quiet down until a hush lies over the great throne hall. Everybody is looking up: the beautiful Queen is asleep on her throne made of wood and amber, resting peacefully in a sweet cloud of warm resins."
