Eau d’Hiver
Okay, this is magic. I don’t know how but through sheer chemistry art Ellena somehow evokes the quote cushioned stillness of a snow covered landscape. Every nose nerd should test this at least once.
Frederic Malle L'Eau d'Hiver is an Oriental blend that translates to "Water of Winter". This is a great fragrance to wear any time. Low key, shimmering and beautiful combination of heliotrope, iris and honey. It opens cool and delicate, but is quickly warmed by the heliotrope and honey and caramel. A beautifully balanced perfume. Notes of Bergamot, angelica, iris, hawthorn, jasmine, honey, carnation, white heliotrope, caramel and musk.
From Bois de Jasmin - "While L’Eau d’Hiver is constructed out of the olfactory opposites, cold and warm, the effect is delicate and graceful like the dance of snowflakes in the air."
From Sali Hughes Beauty - "This perfume is just bliss – like a warm, calming, soothing baby blanket for the nose and yet, very unexpectedly, quietly sexy and deeply elegant. It’s clean but never virginal, soft but never girlie, sensual but in no way smutty."
From Australian Perfume Junkies - "What does this all have to do with L’Eau d’Hiver? It’s that no matter what the day is like, it’s been a great fit. I’ve worn it a lot this last month, when it’s plus 15, clear blues skies and I’m lifting my face to the sun while my little ones happily jump in all the puddles and rivers that are everywhere. It’s the perfect accompaniment for a sunny, joyful day. It’s also worked when it’s minus 20, there’s been a 25cm snow dump and whiteout conditions and I can barely get out of my driveway without getting stuck."

I agree that it is difficult to describe this fragrance. It is warm and cozy, and icy and elegant at the same time. It really does smell like cold, snowy winter air, but also something somewhere between milk and musk. A little bit of fresh, bright floral, caramel, and what your skin smells like if you take a shower with unscented soap and then take nap. Alternately it made me think of the scene in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe when the White Witch gives Edmund the hot drink in the cold forest. I really, really like this one enough to make it my signature but it just didn't last on me. I can't justify the hefty price tag for something I'd have to reapply every two hours.

L'Eau d'Hiver is hard to describe--soft but not dull, powdery but not bland, warming but in a cold, spare way. It has great lasting power on me, but very little projection, which I happen to love. It's the kind of scent you wear for yourself, no one else. Try it out, you deserve it!
