Blackbird was first an award winning menswear store that opened in 2004 in Seattle. Nicole Miller, its founder and creative director, brought Blackbird to new heights in 2013 when she decided to focus on distributing the Blackbird brand internationally and closed her stores. Today Blackbird is known worldwide for its unconventional and remarkable fragrances and grooming products.
Aaron Way, lead perfumer at Blackbird, described the process of creating these unique scents as coming up with an abstract concept before any notes are discussed. Using a few rare or unusual ingredients ensures that their creations are both beautiful and distinct.
Pipe Bomb Intense is the scent of lightning as its spears pummel the earth, the scent of metal electrified and heating up, the scent of water as it sparks and starts to bubble with energy, and the accord created as these forces vie for supremacy in the never-ending clash of the elements. With notes of saltwater, metal, smoke, amber and oud. Pipe Bomb Intense is an eau de parfum, edp.
Blackbird Perfumes: I got a sample a while back. I loved it. So I went full bottle. I have been looking for a realistic water scent. I must say this is by far the best, most realistic water/watery metallic fragrance. There is something so cooling, mineral, dark, metallic, smoky, and mysterious about it. There is nothing else on the market like this. This is a special fragrance for just me. I'm not concerned about getting compliments from others. This is a work of art, that I personally love.
Blackbird Perfumes: After receiving a sample of Pipe Bomb in a pack I knew this scent was something special, but a little weak with my body chemistry. The Intense version is much more noticeable, but still subtle enough to leave some mystery. It's like the smell of a brewing thunderstorm, both uncertain and inexorable, faint and incredibly powerful. As a "cool" scent like Triton, it does lose some it's edge as it wears, settling into a whiff of metal. It's a perfect example of what Blackbird does better than anyone else in perfumery, creating scents that don't quite fit into any established categories with a modernist approach and plenty of experience.
Fragrantica: I bought Pipe Bomb originally which other people could smell on me but I could not smell on myself, even after about ten minutes—strange. With Intense, it is everything I loved about original Pipe Bomb for those ten minutes and then some. I love it so much that I rarely want to wear anything else. It's metallic, almost salty, so distinct that I love smelling it on my clothes after I and I receive compliments on it often. I find it refreshing, never heavy; I especially like it in the summer, as I think warm skin really makes it shine. I hope they never stop producing it or I'll be devastated.
