In usage in the southern United States, a bayou is a body of water typically found in a flat, low-lying area. It is usually an extremely slow-moving stream or river, a marshy lake or wetland or a creek whose current reverses daily due to tides, and contains brackish water highly conducive to fish life and plankton. Bayous are commonly found in the Gulf Coast region of the southern United States, especially in the Mississippi River Delta. Water is often boggy and stagnant. Bayou vegetation ranges from tiny mosses to huge cypress trees. The smell of a bayou is usually a warm deep green scent with a thick aquatic undertones: Spanish moss, evergreen and cypress with watery blue-green notes and an eddy of hothouse flowers and swamp blooms. This sampler will allow you to sample a great variety of fragrances that bring to mind bayous, bogs or wetlands.
