Dana Classic Fragrances Canoe for Men is an aromatic fougere created by Jean Carles and launched in 1936. It features top notes of lavender, clary sage and lemon; middle notes of carnation, patchouli, bourbon geranium, cedar and clove; and base notes of tonka bean, vanilla, oakmoss, heliotrope and musk.
Interesting to note is that Dana Canoe is part of the Smithsonian's collection of cosmetics and personal care products displayed at the National Museum of American History.
Canoe won a 1997 Men's Fragrance Hall of Fame FiFi Award.
It has gone through many reformulations and this is the fragrance that is currently available for sale.
Fragrantica: "Greenish notes abound here. There's patchouli with aromatic leaves, shrubs, lemongrass, vetiver, oak moss but not too much oak moss...It's green but at the same time not an outdoorsy or rugged masculine scent."
Fragrantica: "Canoe adapts itself to a wide range of moods and occasions, and works equally well for all ages. A classic that has stood the test of time, for all the right reasons."
