Autumn 24 captures the fruit of the season: the golden quince. From their website: The door to the kitchen stands open. A basket of quinces, freshly picked, sits on the windowsill, and the scent of warming spices drifts from the stove. Shafts of light break through the cloistered darkness, while ribbons of saffron flame red against an oak table, blackened with use and pressed by many hands. It is into this kitchen scene, resembling a Dutch still life, that we invite you to step with our Autumn 24 fragrance. Our journey begins with the fruit of the season: the quince. Harvested in late October, it carries with it a multiplicity of scents. In its raw state the waxy skin is lightly floral, almost pear-like, which is perhaps why quinces were once used to perfume linen cupboards. Cooked, though, the grainy white flesh becomes amber and emits an enigmatic aroma. Quince itself has no essential oil, so to capture its many facets we turned to the delicate tones of jasmine, neroli and davana, pairing them with caraway, aniseed and carrot seed for their earthy and softly spiced notes. We were happy with this accord for the raw fruit, but in our kitchen the quince is gently simmering too, filling the air with furls of steam, nectar-sweet and velvety. Myrrh, nutmeg and olibanum brought the alchemy we were seeking, transporting us momentarily to the other side of the world. Yet there was a dark, almost leathery element that seemed missing, another layer of honey and spice. We found this in a deep crimson oil we have long been wanting to use: saffron, once worth its weight in gold. Saffron’s great expense lies in the time it takes to extract the flame-red stigmas from autumn crocus flowers. These fine strands must be harvested by hand at mid-morning when the petals are fully open to the sun – it can take up to 200,000 flowers to create one kilogram of dried saffron threads. In cooking, quince is often spiced with saffron, and we discovered the same affinity in the fragrance, the saffron enriching the scent and bringing the finishing touch to our kitchen scene. To complement its soft pear-like notes, the floral tones of jasmine and davana were added, set upon a warm, gently spiced base of myrrh and caraway seed. It was created from 22 natural ingredients: 6 top notes, 8 mid notes, and 8 base notes.
Autumn 24 features top notes of caraway seed, olibanum, blood orange rind, grapefruit rind, aniseed and saffron; middle notes of bergamot rind, carrot seed, Jamaica pimento, jasmine grandiflorum, nutmeg, patchouli, coriander seed and neroli; and base notes of Siam benzoin, davana, liatrix leaf, brown-eyed rock rose, vetiver root, red cedar, myrrh and oakwood. It is an eau de parfum, edp.
Autumn 2024 is twice aged and bottled in Somerset England and is a fragrance that can be purchased based on a subscription.
FFERN AUTUMN 2024 REVIEWS
Fragrantica: I love this fragrance ! I have Summer 24 as well and the way Ffern captures seasons in their perfumes is really incredible so far. Growing up, my neighbors had a quince tree and the fruit would smell just like this. They would make my family quince jelly and the dry down of this perfume sends me right back to that childhood moment. It's really special !
Fragrantica: Ffern definitely has a certain DNA that is present throughout all their fragrances-- a sort of dusty, almost papery, herbal quality that I find really enjoyable. I for one am happy, despite their promise that this would be their most gourmand fragrance yet, that Autumn 24 doesn't lean traditionally gourmand and still maintains a very natural-smelling, grounded quality that is present in all of their other scents. That said, I do pick up on what they were going for and totally get an almost honeyed, stewed fruit quality on my skin during the dry down. I imagine golden raisins slowly bubbling away in a pan of molasses.
Reddit: Autumn 24 is Amazing! I am so surprised so many people don't seem to like autumn 23 or 24. That spicy smokey citrus scent is just amazing to my nose. I sometimes spray non-organic perfume on my clothes or hair, but only Ffern and essential oils touches my skin (these synthetic chemicals have only been around for decades, and I don't want to absorb them into my skin out of paranoia). I often spray a little Autumn 23 in with my Summer 24, and Autumn 24 smells like combining both with a sprinkle of smoky-goodness. There seems to be a note of birch and honey in there as well? I don't think I'll be adding anything else to layer with this smell, because it's perfect for me as of now. Idk something abt this earthy, witchy smell! 5/5 stars
Ffern: It smells very much like autumn on my skin. Like having just stepped outside from the kitchen to the crisp autumn air, with the scent of pear pies and spiced cider still swirling around you.
Ffern: I'm thrilled with this one. Love the warm, earthy tones. It smells like autumn...even winter, with cinnamon, stewed fruit, black pepper, chestnuts and fire embers. Can't stop sniffing my wrist!
Ffern: It changes notes, has tones of spice but sweetness. Somehow stays warm and welcoming throughout the experience. Something I truly admire.
Ffern: I haven't worn anything like this! At first I smell baked quince with warming spices, then it tapers to almost an incense smell. I really love it.
