Ektoplasma is part of the Ghosts summer fragrance collection with spirits as its unlikely muse for the season. Breezy. Diaphanous. Vaporous. Ethereal. Transparent. Sparkling. Spectral. Lyrical. These are words that are often used to describe summer fragrances. But they’re also go-to adjectives for ghosts. This collection is a collaboration between Heretic and the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland. The museum had an exhibit called “Ghosts” about five different paranormal activities and asked Douglas Little, founder and perfumer of Heretic Parfum, to create fragrances to accompany the exhibit. Each parfum has a spectral musk accord that’s a combination of safe synthetic and naturally occurring musks that create unique sensations.
Musky, transculent and diffusive, Ektoplasma is a spectral residue suspended between worlds. It is built around the illusion of skin and vapor at once. Cold citrus and aromatic woods evaporate into a cloud of luminous vapor before melting into creamy lactonic florals and translucent sandalwood. Skin musks and ambergris drift through the composition like dust illuminated in moonlight. Neither floral nor woody, neither living nor gone, Ektoplasma exists in the space between matter and memory. The lingering trace of a body no longer there. Ektoplasm emerged in early spiritualist practice as a material said to appear during séances, exuded from the body and shaped by unseen forces. Described as cool, pale, and mutable: neither fully body nor fully air, it occupied the uncomfortable space between presence and disappearance. Ektoplasma is an eau de parfum, edp.

Heretic Parfum: “Heretic Ektoplasma is a glorious enigma in a bottle. From the very first spray, I was completely captivated. It has this incredible, haunting quality where it subtly drifts away only to pull you back in—clinging to the skin like a beautiful, fragrant shadow. The scent profile is beautifully complex; it’s an earth-meets-ether blend of rich, floral soil and soft, velvety powder. It is bold, unusual, and absolutely magnificent. If you want a signature scent that turns heads and defies explanation, this is it.”
Heretic Parfum: “My favorite ghost that took some time to find me. This one feels surprising with all the other scent profiles in this collection, so I didn’t quite understand it at first. It’s bright and floral but has a soft deep ground that keeps it from being sharp or perfumed. It’s settles in like warm skin and cherries and clean laundry and rained on earth. I hope this one is permanent.”
Heretic Parfum: “New favorite! This scent is beautiful on its own, but layers so well with other scents in similar scent profiles. Ektoplasma is like a warm hug on a cool evening.”
Heretic Parfum: “This is my first time using a skin musk, this has a very soft, elegant, somewhat strange and cold, but warm at the same time fragrance it’s a little spicy but still floral and it is creamy. I would absolutely say this is a ghost fragrance and my first day trying it and wearing it. I got a compliment and thing is I thought that I was the only one that could smell it because it is very soft and lights definitely not overbearing at all and then it intertwines with your own skin fragrance and creates the most magical experience.”
Fragrantica: “Warm, enveloping, foggy/dusty. It is my favorite of the Ghosts collection so far. Musky, lactonic, and skin-like, with more going on than just Ambroxan. I didn't put a lot on but got a soft whiff of it occasionally all day. I can still smell it a little 9 hours later.”
Fragrantica: “This is in my top three Heretic fragrances of all time and I almost gave it away because I tested it on paper and not my skin. PUT IT ONNNN. When you spray it on a tester it smells like cough syrup!! BUT when it hits your skin it’s this magical soft bouquet with a twist: slightly wilted!!! And I LOOOOOOVE the smell of crunchy flowers! Give it a chance, it’s the only fragrance from the Ghosts Collection that isn’t sold out and I think perhaps a previous formulation skewed everyone’s opinion of this new delicious elixir of ghostly whimsy!”
Fragrantica: “I love this one, it’s warm and rich. It opens almost with a deep gourmand edge and settles into an aged musk that I can’t get enough of. The scent is comforting but almost alien at the same time. Might be my favorite in the Ghosts collection.”
Fragrantica: “I absolutely love this! On me the opening smells like a garden in the morning in September when it rains, the air is cool and damp but there is still some floral quality to it. When it dries down it's like a woody floral musk, super comforting and wearable. Sits very close to the skin though, I have to use quite a few sprays.”
Fragrantica: “Reminds me of fresh cut flower stems and blooming lily pads on the initial spray. Later on it dries and reveals an absolutely amazing musky scent. Reminds me of an old sweater or taking a walk at night. There’s something aquatic here, but in a vegetal freshwater way, nothing that suggests an ocean or beach.”
