Matiere Premier Encens Suave was created in 2019 by Aurelien Guichard. an amber spicy with notes of coffee, incense, labdanum, benzoin and Madagascar vanilla. The draft of the scent to be created was "A black incense, addictive and carnal." It is that - a vanilla-infused incense that is soaring Cathedral incense clinging to your clothes as you are seated at the bakery. Matiere Premier Encens Suave is an eau de parfum, edp.
Matiere Premier Encens Suave became my obsession after I read a Redditor's collection post noting they enjoyed "smelling like three things: desserts, 18th century brothel, and Catholic guilt." This is the stunning Catholic guilt.
Fragrantica - "An amber-gourmand masterpiece.
Smelling this is such a pleasure, it is a perfectly made fragrance to my nose.
A rich and opulent unisex oriental blended with some perfect notes:
- the amber(benzoin+labdanum) is resinous and has this light, luminous vibe to it.
- the vanilla is perfectly used , rich and not too sweet.
- the incense has a dark and mysterious tone which gives character and almost a tarry , rubbery vibe to the scent."
Fragrantica - "Encens Suave is a journey into the mind of any person who has entered, at least once, a Catholic or Orthodox church. It is the incense of Christmas mass, the warmth of familiar faces, the sweetness of milk and coffee on Sunday morning, roasted chestnuts in autumn, the smell of burnt paper typical of church incense. It is a journey into childhood. Encens Suave opens with the same smell of incense as in churches, white, smoky, dry, which makes your throat sting. I feel a touch of resin, olibanum, cypriol oil and elemi. In the middle of this composition, I feel several light notes of roasted chestnuts, milky notes, a roasted coffee bean. Then comes the dense component, which gives dimension to the perfume: myrrh, benzoin, tonka beans, amber, vanilla. Where the opening notes are thin and light like smoke, the base notes are dense, thick."
Fragrantica - " First of all, the incense is finer here. It is less dense, but it has the hidden bitterness and sharpness that adorns the first-class material (the brand itself otherwise gives the impression of superconsciousness in terms of natural resources, so it emphasizes where is each of the ingredients from, etc.). In this respect, this incense is somewhat reminiscent of the one in "Eau sacrée", except that the latter has a somewhat cold, mineral tone, while here there is a discreet vanilla tone in the background, giving the incense warmth, which is due to benzoin, a resin that has some sweetness. At the very beginning, a note of coffee appears. But “Encens suave”, despite that, is not a gourmand fragrance. At first I was skeptical seeing vanilla among the notes, but it is so well blended and dosed here that it doesn’t stand out, making this incense truly “elegant,” as its name suggests. Because elegant here means: with measure, and in every way."
Fragrantica - "Autumn/Winter heaven. This is like the best church incense (like the incense used in a grand cathedral) meets a French bakery cooking the most intoxicatingly delicious vanilla cake. It's so delicious, cosy and so interesting. My 4 year old daughter calls it the yummy cake one. It's her favourite :)."
Fragrantica - "This is it! It's like the best of Musc Ravageur and Labdanum 18 was taken and the play-doughness of Labdanum 18 was edited out of the mix."
Fragrantica - "My husband came in to the office to say something smelled good, but didn't even think of incense until I told him. Doesn't give off smoky, funeral, churchy clouds--Nor does it give you sweet candy rich-kids at the clubs either. Guichard has given us a grown up, more sophisticated alternative to his discontinued masterpiece Bond No 9 Andy Warhol Silver Factory. A peppery, sweet-candy hook is the first punch, which dries down to 6 hours of warm, spicy, Kyoto temple just after the rain, THEN... there it is... the neighbour is making coffee... you barely notice it... you also barely notice that she left her vanilla paste jar open on the counter."
