Rochas Femme was created at the height of The Depression by Edmond Roudnitska, at the request of Marcel Rochas, and it was to be a gift for Rochas' wife. The story has it that Roudnitska created Femme while while pondering a rubbish dump and a paint factory. Olivier Cresp reformulated Rochas Femme in 1989, and there are two distinct versions, the post-1989 version bringing in the cumin note. This scent is full-bodied, said to be inspired by Mae West, and it shows. There is nothing of a young girl or ingenuie in this scent. It's a perfume that's been around the block and now has the whole block following her like the cats following that little thief in "Love Potion No. 9."

Femme has a beautiful chypre base, sweet dark plummy spiciness, and a touch of pencil shavings. It is softer and more short lived than I expected but I can't believe a perfume this good can be had for so little! Similar to Amouage Jubilation xxv(I'm sure Femme was its inspiration) which I love but is a bit cost prohibitive. I see Femme in my near future.
While this is not something I wear as a 'public' fragrance, I love the way it smells and brings back memories of my beloved Nana! Natural Oakmoss absolute, unaltered Bergamot oil, genuine Ambergris tincture, Mysore White Sandalwood oil...this fragrance likely contains many ingredients that we will never see in contemporary, mass produced fragrance again. EVER. Try to experience these at least once while you have the chance. Femme blooms moodily on the skin and lingers like a precious but sweetly melancholy memory, an evocative black and white photograph of earlier, very different times. As you might expect, with quality ingredients, a little dab'll do ya and it has long, looong legs.

I love this scent for the cool months of the year. Also love that it just gently fades away. Mae West? Maybe. Come up and smell me some time -lol-
