The first time I smelled Ylang-Ylang in person was on a trip to Costa Rica. The caretaker of the house we rented pulled a droopy-looking blossom off of a very ordinary looking scraggly-ish tree and handed it to me. It was a revelation. I had always thought Ylang was just something they threw in perfume as filler, but it is rich and dark, a little indolic, with a brightness like jasmine has, an amazing scent just on its own. I tucked that flower behind my ear every day I was in Costa Rica.

I am doing the Perfume Posse 101 sampler packs, but I got this one also, as I was curious about ylang, and also Joy is so famous, and I wanted to try it. Surprisingly, I prefer the Tom Ford Black Orchid to Joy, and I never would have tried it, if not for this sampler. It is so rich and dark and complex. The 1 ml. gives you quite a lot of tries before you decide if you really like it, in different moods. These are both excellent selections for newbies.
