By Kilian In the Garden of Good and Evil - Playing With the Devil is a women's amber floral scent.
By Kilian Playing With the Devil is a part of the Garden of Good and Evil series. Created by Calice Becker and launched in 2013. Here, as with the rest of the series, he uses the concept of good and evil as inspiration for a modern fruit-led composition. And as with the three previous scents in the series, naughty always wins out. Notes of black currant, white peach, litchi, blood orange, pimento, pepper, rose, jasmine, vanilla, cedar, sandalwood, patchouli, benzoin and tonka. From the brand - "Playing With The Devil, inspired by forbidden fruit interpreted in modern, imaginative way. The concept of god and evil is recognized in this composition in which on the one side the creator offers sweet, fruity tamed accord sprinkled with insolence and lecherous heat of resin and hot spices."
Kilian Hennessy launched By Kilian in 2007. Yup, the Cognac Hennessy, grandson to the founder of Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton Group, he followed his interest in scent, writing his thesis on the semantics of odors. After spending time with leading perfumers, he launched By Kilian with the Collection L'oeuvre Noire (Black Masterpiece) series. There are now 10 fragrances in that series. The over-the-top marketing copy drew a lot of criticism in the early part of his launch, but the gorgeous packaging - black lacquer boxes and black bottles - started to win us over, as did the artistry of the fragrances.
Fragrantica - "For me this is a perfectly executed fruity and spicy combo. Sweet fruity peach and black currant with that very interesting pimento pepper. The opening is very playful and innocent but gets very...eerie and mysterious. Dark and a little brooding, solely from the pepper. Exactly how the name sounds. You’re teasing that lurking evil underneath a sweet exterior and it comes out in the dry down. Such a unique and fun scent."
Fragrantica - "Playing with the Devil is a play in three acts. The first one is all juicy fruits, smiling sun and silky touches. Cassis, peaches and citruses play hide and seek in the gardens of Versailles, their velvet dresses rustling in the bushes. Yet something ominous is lurking in the shades. And is soon revealed to be the hunter, quickly approaching his delightfully giggling peaches. An excellent tracker, his pimento can do no wrong. This hot and spicy phase is truly something to behold. I love it. The third act is warmed woods, milky red, and the breathless satisfaction of a game well played."
