Damp is a speculative scent designed for a time when soil takes over abandoned anthropogenic structures. It is composed as a single molecule that is responsible for the majority of soil's smell. Agar Olfactory is based in Chicago and is a project in speculative olfaction by Agustine Zegers. It imagines climate disaster and apocalyptic scenarios and the type of smell landscapes that would exist in such events.
From their website: Year 3030: human extinction has allowed flora to propagate wildly, bursting through concrete and rigid architectural structures. the skin of the earth has restored itself to a microbially-dense state. soil bacteria celebrate wildly as rain showers dampen their surface. damp gives you a taste of this future; it’s a gentle whisper of a musty room in the middle of a forest, the breath of the earth as wet soil. Damp features notes of dampness, wet soil and earth. It is a perfume.
