Byredo De Los Santos was launched in 2022, inspired by the ceremonies of diverse cultural remembrance, like Dia de Los Muertos and All Saints Day, it has notes of clary sage, mirabelle, orris, ciste oil, musks, ambroxan and Palo Santo. Ben Gorham - "Over the past year, I started to explore how different cultures approached the idea of loss in order to shift my personal perspective. I didn’t want to ‘move on’, or ‘move forward’, because that implied forgetting. Instead, I wanted to create a way to celebrate my memories, to honor the beauty of life, and to translate that into scent."
Excerpt from Byredo:
"A scent created in celebration of life, De Los Santos incants memories and acknowledges the fleeting. An aromatic cloud of musk is pierced by the clarity of sage. The splendor of amber and incense is grounded by iris root and mirabelle.
Earthen notes of cistus flourish in dry heat. In homage to the traditions of Día de los Muertos and All Saints’ Day, De Los Santos captures the transcendent power of coming together in collective ceremonies, translating scent into a new ritual of remembrance."
Founded in 2006 in Sweden Byredo perfume's creator Ben Gorham (former basketball player) wanted to create perfumes of quality while keeping their production in Sweden. Gorham had been fascinated with fragrance much of his life. When he meet Pierre Wulff, a perfumer, Byredo came into being.
Byrdie - "Scent and memory are tied in a way that, once a connection is made, it can’t be undone. Whether it’s the scent of your grandmother’s house or the scent of your lover’s t-shirt, scents have a way of imprinting themselves. We use scents in rituals to bring back old memories, and we use perfume as a ritual to create new ones. Maybe Byredo is flying a little close to the sun with their concept that dances between ceremony and scent, but regardless, De Los Santos is definitely one that's hard to forget."
Fragrantica - "As someone who lives in Los Angeles and is fascinated by this city, I’m always on the lookout for LA-inspired perfumes. This one really smells like the desert air in the hills around LA: green sharpness, I suspect from the sage, combines with the earthiness of the orris and softness of the musk to create a well-rounded yet unique experience."
Fragrantica - "Dry dusty hay and grass, sage makes it a little herbal and mystical. I occasionally get the creamy tangy palo santo base and some earthy-sweet musk. The "plum" note is a tangy, slightly fruity, just barely sweet note that I really like (for someone not usually interested in fruity scents). This could be a romantic depiction of the chaparral hills in Southern California, like around LA - not hyperrealistic but inspired."
Fragrantica - "This reminds me of running in the Mojave Desert after the rain.. one of my favorite smells in the world! It’s a beautiful mossy sage, I smell no plum whatsoever."
Fragrantica - "This scent is another one of Byredo that evokes a super strong scent memory of mine, living in the Altai Mountains, being surrounded by thousands of herbs and wild flowers in the summer, dried herbs being sold at the market, herbal tea (I think it’s the Cistus in here that gives such a strong herbal tea vibe). It’s very bright and projects a lot on me!"
