Khara was named after a city in Nepal. The thought of an oriental perfume that wasn’t a heavy scent intrigued many woman. Khara was a light, spring-like fragrance that featured top notes of aldehydes, lemon and green notes; middle notes of spices, lavender, jasmine, gardenia and tuberose; and base notes of amber, sandalwood, musk and oakmoss.
From an advertisement in 1976 - "KHARA The deliciously new fragrance by Max Factor. Khara is racy and sensual. Designed for the exuberant woman of today."
Interesting to note, is that Khara is part of the Smithsonian's collection of cosmetics and personal care products displayed at the National Museum of American History.
Khara was discontinued around 1983.
