Description

Solstice Scents Monastic is a resinous rose incense created by Angela St. John. It has notes of fog, frankincense, myrrh, roses, spikenard, patchouli, peru balsam, labdanum.   Thsi is the edp, eau de parfum.  From the brand - "The initial application of Monastic is very bold and takes a few minutes to unfold as it warms on the skin. This is a medium throw fragrance with good longevity. Dries down to focus on the resins, primarily frankincense and a little dusty myrrh. This fragrance is different from our other resinous offerings such as Basilica, Scrying Smoke, Incensum and Conjure Dark. It shares parallels with all of these perfumes though. Monastic does not contain any wood notes like some of the other perfumes just mentioned. It is also only marginally sweet. It is a thick, resinous, sacred fragrance coupled with wafts of velvety rose."

Solstice Scents Monastic Perfume Reviews

Fragrantica - "I've been looking for a good church incense and this one is it for me. There's a definite dusty, powdery note that gives me the impression of a gothic cathedral that hasn't been open in many years, stuffy, old, you can still smell that incense, it's just more subdued. I get a bit of the rose too and overall the scent is more on the feminine side. I compared it side by side with Basilica and they are similar, but that one is stronger, while Monastic is more feminine. Maybe like a nunnery."

Fragrantica - "WOW just wow. This must be the hidden gem of Solstice. It is a velvety black rose laying on a cold stone alter while tendrils of fog drift across the stone floor. Church incense burns nearby in an ornamental censer. such beautiful church incense with resinous/balsam undertones. Monastic smells like an old world vampire. One of the darkest gothiest rose scents I’ve ever smelled, terrific silage too!"

    This is a whole mood

I was blown away by how amazing this fragrance is. It has far more depth than the type of fragrances you often get from Indie companies. Since I don't have any monastic-related scent memories, I can't connect this fragrance with any type of religious experience. However, what it did remind me of were the sweet grasses and resins I remember smelling while camping along the banks of a bay off the Gulf of Mexico as a child. Some of the individual scents I experienced from this fragrance include wood, honey, cinnamon, hay, brandy, and resins. Plus, it's powdery with the faintest hint of rose. I don't generally like honey in perfumes because they can smell like saliva to me, but I liked it here because it mixed with the hay scent to become something more primally sweet and musky. I don't know that this is a crowd-pleaser; it's more of a mood, and I was happy to inhale it all day. This scent is so amazing that I'm looking forward to trying many more from this house.
