Description

Zoologist Elephant, was launched in 2017 and was an Art and Olfaction Awards Finalist in 2018. It is not a dark and ponderous perfume at all, it is a little earthy and green, with an airy feel that makes it soar.

The perfumer notes for Zoologist Elephant -
"Huge trees quake at their approach, vulnerable leaves shuddering as the ground rumbles under heavy footsteps. They come with appetites as massive as their lumbering bodies. Nothing is spared from their bottomless hunger – trees stripped bare, roots upturned, even the tiniest blooms cannot escape their grasp. When the behemoths move on, they leave behind a path of destruction. Yet what often looks like carnage is actually a renaissance. The elephants fulfill a vital role – purging the delicate ecosystem, allowing new life to flourish.

From beneath a canopy of lush, damp foliage, the complex aromas of Zoologist Elephant emerge. Into a mixture of invigorating Darjeeling and incense, swirl hints of coconut and cocoa. With the patience of a foraging herd stripping the bark from a thicket of trees, the fragrance dissipates gradually. What is revealed is the core of the perfume – a beautiful and satisfying blend of woody notes, which dry down to an elegant, natural sandalwood scent."

Created by Chris Bartlett, Zoologist Elephant features notes of tree leaves, Darjeeling tea, incense, magnolia, coconut milk, jasmine, cocoa, amber, patchouli, musks* woods, and sandalwood. *Synthetic Notes as Zoologist Elephant does not use animal products. It is an extrait de parfum at 20% concentration.

Reviews of Zoologist Elephant

From Basenotes - "If you thought this would be a heavy, lumbering composition, you are in for a big surprise. It is light and airy, almost delicate. There is a green, sappy background. Maybe fig, I thought to myself, and I don’t like fig. But I do like this one, so maybe it isn’t fig. No point in speculating, because with any well blended perfume you can’t pick out the component elements, it is a total gestalt."

From The Fragrant Journey - "I find the amber adds a very delightful warmth to the wood notes and slowly simmers with a touch of spiciness. This is my favorite stage of Elephant. It has become softer and a little more serious,  and on my skin at least is a more personal scent, apparent to me but probably not those a few feet away. It gives a sense of meditative beauty, which is a fitting tribute to these magnificent creatures. Once again Zoologist Perfumes has produced  a thought provoking study on the scent of an animal, in this case Elephant, and also created a very wearable and beautiful perfume."

Fragrantica - "I wasn’t expecting to love this that much. At first sniff I was in complete awe. Like being transported to a lush green rainforest at night during a storm. This is truly a piece of art!! Juicy, green, humid, with wet soil and leaves, foliage full of rain and all. I’m really not an articulate enough writer to describe this! Like others have said, it’s so hyperreal that it’s more of an experience than a fragrance"

Fragrantica - "Elephant sends you hurtling into a tropical jungle from the first notes - the rich soil rendered in cacao and bitter tea leaves, then breaking through the trees, snapping stems and inhaling an enormous, almost physical greenness, brushing delicate creamy florals out of the way. It's such a picturesque, transportive fragrance, it teeters on the edge of overwhelm. The first hour almost threatens to flatten you in its stampede, but if you hold on tight the ride is well worth it."

    Wearing it as I type!

This fragrances starts very sharp and green. It’s an opening I associate with fig fragrances. Instead, an unexpected cocoa note comes in. I couldn’t have anticipated being such a fan of this combo, but I keep reaching for this sample again and again.
