The term Grapefruit is believed to be indicative to the manner in which it grows in clusters on trees, which looks like the shape of large yellow grapes. Another reason is the premature Grapefruit resembles the shape of unripe green grapes. Like all Citrus fruit Grapefruit is a Hesperidum.  European explorers established Mandarins, Lemons and Oranges in the Americas, the Grapefruit doesn’t originate from the Old World and is the only citrus fruit that does not.  Originating from the Caribbean in the late 18th-century grapefruit is a relatively young species.  It is believed the Grapefruit may be a natural hybrid between the pomelo and an orange, originating in Barbados. About a third of the world's harvested grapefruits originate in the United States grown in Florida. Grapefruit is also known as Shaddock and by two other scientific names, “Citrus Racemosa” and “Citrus Maxima”.

The essential oil of grapefruit is taken from the skin or peel of the fruit. The distinct aroma of the grapefruit, sharp but refreshing, may stimulate mental health and emotional health.  Grapefruit essential oil can be used in aromatherapy as an anti-depressant.  Lift is what Grapefruit does best - juicy, happy, fizzy and optimistic. It is best for someone who is in self-doubt, grief, frustration, dependency and criticism. The extraction method is done by cold pressing the outer peels of the fruits giving a yellow, sharp citrusy scented liquid.  With a small amount of oil collected from each fruit its market is fairly specific. Grapefruit essential oil is generally used for high-end shampoos, soaps, conditioner and lotions and most products are made for exterior application, aromatherapy and diffusers.  Grapefruit essential oil can be applied to the skin when combined with some type of oil like almond or olive oil.  Blending the essential oil with fragrant flowers like Lavender or even Geranium makes a popular product for massage, however, frankincense and even bergamot are also a good mix with this oil and used in the massage industry. Grapefruit essential oil is also said to promote hair growth but scientific evidence on this is not solid. Grapefruit essential oil can have a sharp but very refreshing aroma creating a sense of reinvigoration.
