Description

Amouage Gold Man is the signature scent for Amouage.  The classic French Perfumer, Guy Robert, was hired to design this scent using classic Arabic perfumer materials with a classic French twist.  Guy Robert remarked of the scent “you always have a dream of creating the perfume, the one in which you are given free rein to use all the essences of your experience, your thought and imagination, no matter how expensive.”  Opening with a little citrus note, the incense and florals add depth and richness, with plenty of animalic notes at the base to keep this very complex.  It takes very little Gold, whether the men's or women's version, to scent you, and this is what "wealthy" smells like.

Reviews of Amouage Gold Man

The Candy Perfume Boy - "Gold Man unfolds with a dry, dusty rose, there is a touch of citrus up top but the general impression is warm, rich florals. It’s not long before the civet rears its head, and the civet here is very animalic but not disgustingly so, the florals are strong enough to stop the civet from becoming too funky.  I find that the orris comes through a lot stronger in Gold Man than it does in Woman, it works with the myrrh to create a spicy, powdery effect that coupled with the strong florals creates a nice contrast of East meets West.  Gold Man shares a similar creamy sandalwood base to Woman but it is dustier and drier due to the addition of oak moss and a stronger cedar wood facet. The base lasts for hours, if not days and one of my favourite things to do is spray Gold Man on my hand a couple of hours before I go to bed and wake up smelling that glorious, civet/sandalwood base throughout the night."

Now Smell This - "The top notes smell like citrus and incense, slightly reminiscent of Etro Shaal Nur but much deeper and richer. As the citrus fades, it gets sweeter and a bit fruitier. There are said to be a number of florals other than those listed in the notes, including rose and tuberose, but the jasmine is the predominant floral note, and it is a lovely, true jasmine. The far dry down is deep incense over a woody animalic base."

Fragrantica: "The best opening in a masculine, ever! But like a modern day sword in the stone. Are you brave enough to wear this many flowers? Definitely challenging but worth persevering with. It's so insanely good. Glorious, bombastic, totally show-offy."

    the sublime and the ridiculous

This is an opulent and also offensive (shall we politely say civet?)fragrance, in the tradition of Chanel No. 5 and others. It is thrilling at first in its richness, but then the civet wins the battle, and the drydown is a rout-- Opulence- 0%, Civet-100%. Am I the only one who has noticed that this emperor has no clothes?!

    Almost Great

A sweeping, aldehydic floral. Lily of the Valley is loud and clear alongside citrus-like frankincense. It is probably “for men” because of a clean, soapy nature that tones down what would otherwise be a very powdery perfume. And the aldehydes are more like suggestions of aldehydes; they don’t sizzle and pop in the heady way that feminine perfumes do. Pretty good, but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, as some do.
