How to Make Fragrance Last Longer in 11 Steps

4th Dec 2024

Whether you’re a beginning perfumista or a long-time scent connoisseur, you likely want to smell like your perfume all day. From protecting longevity in the bottle to maintaining the scent on your skin, we have advice for you! Continue reading to learn how to master the long lasting scent of your favorite fragrance. We’ll also explore how to make your perfumes last longer in their bottles.

3 Steps to Make Perfumes Last the Longest in the Bottle

For your signature scent to linger all day, you should take steps to preserve its longevity in the bottle. Manufacturers design their perfume bottles to protect fragrances from evaporating. Decant packaging, in contrast, will not work for long-term storage, since they lack a factory seal.

Additionally, perfume does have a shelf life. Discoloration is a red flag that your perfume may be out of date. Here are steps you can take to preserve your scents in their bottles:

  1. Don’t open a fragrance bottle unless you’re planning to consistently use it. Oxidation happens when oxygen meets perfume and can affect its scent gradually.
  2. Store your perfume in a cool, dark, dry area. Light, heat, and humidity will all affect delicate ingredients and cause color and scent change.
  3. Don’t shake your fragrance bottles, because this can increase oxidation.

8 Steps to Make Fragrance Last Longer on the Skin

The good news for those who want to smell good all day is that you have multiple techniques to try. Follow 1 or more of these tips to maintain your fragrance.

  1. Spray your hair (lightly) with perfume. Too much can dry and damage your hair, but just a light spray will linger until your next wash.
  2. Apply perfume to clothes. Heavier materials like wool will hold scent the longest, sometimes for more than 24 hours.
  3. Select the right type of fragrance—each has different concentrations and lasting power.
    1. Parfum: 20-30% strength, lasts for 12+ hours.
    2. Eau de parfum: 10-20% strength, lasts for 8+ hours.
    3. Eau de toilette: 5-15% strength, lasts for 4+ hours.
    4. Eau de cologne: 2-4% strength, lasts for 2+ hours.
    5. Eau fraiche: 1-3% strength, lasts for 2 hours.
  4. Understand the meaning of fragrance ingredients. The ingredients that make fragrance last longer on the skin are fixatives. These natural or synthetic ingredients help scent stick to the skin and prevent evaporation.
  5. Apply your fragrance only to freshly washed and moisturized skin. The oils in perfume won’t adhere as well to dry skin.
  6. Layer scents by choosing complementary body lotions, creams, body washes, or other scented products.
  7. Spray perfume on pulse points where your body heat is the highest. This warmth will help the scent absorb and activate.
  8. Don’t rub your wrists, because this can affect the fragrance notes. Always treat your perfume with delicacy!
