In 2017, synthetic biologists extracted samples of extinct flowers from the Harvard Herbarium. Through DNA sequencing, scientists identified genes that might encode fragrance-producing enzymes. They printed these codes and inserted them into yeast, which were cultured through a fermentation process to produce scent molecules. These molecules were given to world-renowned perfumers to formulate the fragrances found in Future Society's Scent Surrection Collection.
Through biotechnology, scent molecules of the Wendlandia angustifolia were identified and reinterpreted into a crisp blend of eucalyptus, florals, and soft woods. Perfumer Daniela Andrier composed the fragrance to tell the story of extinction from the earth’s perspective: quiet, resilient, and alive with memory. Invisible Woods is an aromatic woody floral fragrance inspired by India's lost bloom. It is an aromatic woody floral perfume inspired by Wendlandia angustifolia, a flowering tree once native to India’s Western Ghats, last recorded in 1917 and lost to drought. It has vanished, reappeared, and vanished again, an echo in the forest, never fully gone. This fragrance captures the quiet persistence of nature, reminding us that growth is not always loud. It features top notes of grapefruit, eucalyptus and ginger; middle notes of rose absolute and chamomile; and base notes of iris and Akigalawood. Invisible Woods is an eau de parfum, edp.
Fragrantica: "People are saying this smells woody but it comes off a lot more floral to me. It smells a lot like sex bomb by lush and I wear them together. This makes me feel so clean and fresh and it's amazing for summer and spring but smells good all year."
Fragrantica: "Eucalyptus is an immediate put-off for me, but all I have to say is WOAH. The eucalyptus adds something light and airy–it’s not the usual strong, artificial oil scent. While it dries slowly, it is quick to leave your skin and a little too soapy initially to be perfect for me. But this is quite the summer delight. The sweetness is absolutely perfect."
Fragrantica: "This is so serene and calming. All the notes just blended beautifully together into a lasting skin scent. While it does not smell like the forests I've been in, it does evoke the feeling of communing with the forest and breathing the fresh air. The eucalyptus, ginger, and chamomile together renders a herbal calming freshness sensation for me. It's almost a tea like fragrance without the tea note, if that makes sense. The projection is not great, but the longevity is decent and I can keep breathing this wave of calm when I bring my wrist to my nose. I have not smelled any fragrance like this so far and I'm really liking it. This is what I wish spas smell like."
