Clean yet woodsy
Think leather, sandalwood and for some reason cucumber. This is one of the few fragrances that does not change into a sickly sweet smell on me. It lasts all day. I love that it doesn’t morph into something else in dry down.
Le Labo Santal 33 calls to mind the Marlboro Man. Le Labo wanted to create a fragrance inspired by the great American myth - every man wanted to be him and every woman wanted to have him. This is a scent that is perfect for both a man or a woman.
Santal 33 has probably become one of the best-selling fragrances for Le Labo. It was written up by Jezebel as the fragrance everyone stopped her and asked what she was wearing. It is a great-smelling fragrance. It is not personally my pick as the best in the line - Patchouli 24, Rose 31, Vanille 44, Gaiac and Poivre are all much better, more interesting fragrances. What Santal 33 does do is smell great as you are walking by people. It has great waft and just makes a nose go, Wow, that smells great! The drawback - it started out as the scent nobody else was weraing. Now? Not so much.
It features notes of cardamom, iris, violet, ambrox, Australian sandalwood, papyrus, cedarwood, spices, leather and musk. This is an eau de parfum, edp.
From Basenotes - "The more time passes, the fragrance relaxes and grows as a smell into a creamy sandalwood with cardamom and papyrus, it sweetens a bit but still maintains the leathery aspect which is now paired with soft buttery iris. By the end, the fierce animal has been tamed; it's a smooth, warm, aromatic and woody fragrance."
From Fashionista - "The perfume is the fragrant embodiment of filler words such as "like" and "um," good for dressing up emptiness and likely why it's become so popular within the hotel lobby market. However, when every space, from trendy bars to subway cars, smells the same, there is little distinction between the lifestyle we are supposed to covet and everyday happenstance."
The New York Times - "Like an under-the-radar It bag prized for its unidentifiable features and nondescript branding, Santal 33 quickly became a sort of cult secret, whispered through wafts of sandalwood and cedar, only detected by those in the know."

Body chemistry changes everything. I don’t get the dill or sweet smell at all. Sandalwood, Cedar and leather are primary smells in dry down for me. I love how hours later I catch a woodsy aroma.

Hey, I thought this was a man's cologne but so many women seem to like it based on the reviews here. My wife said it smells like something holy, like the Vatican or herbal essences but I like it :-) In fact as the day wears on, the more it lingers and smells great. It's been 5 hours thru the day and I can still smell the scent. So starting to love this cologne and thinking of buying a bigger bottle!
It's "OK" pleasant enough but certainly not worthy of buying the full size bottle. Not at all. Now in regards to Surrender to Chance and their customer service... I'm beyond impressed by the individual attention and service they gave me. I will definitely remain a customer. A company like this deserves my loyalty!
Sadly, my skin mutates a lot of fragrances in unexpected ways. I think this is an example. It turns into a mild Fracas on me. After I read several reviews referring to dill, I could detect that too, though that wasn't as unpleasant as the heavy gardenia pall that my chemistry converted it to. Oh well! Fortunately there's a whole universe of woody fragrances to try.
I'm learning, the description entices you, but, this scent didn't last and yes dill or vinegar smell to me. Glad I got a chance to try before I jumped ahead and purchased.
It's not for the faint of heart. I love this fragrance--it smells like leather, tobacco, florals on me. When I wear it, people do compliment me on how good I smell. A little goes a long way and it's my go-to forever, I hope.
Given its top and base notes, this fragrance sounds heavenly--warm, modern and inviting. On my skin, though, it opens up peppery and ultimately gives way to a subtle, spicy smell that is long-lasting yet isn't anything special. In a word, it's "okay." My husband literally shrugged when I asked him what he thought of it after I'd been wearing it for a few days.
I, like many others, read a review of this scent on Jezebel, and had to try it. I typically loathe anything too sweet smelling, so this sounded like it could be wonderful. Unfortunately, when it arrived, I was underwhelmed. Perhaps it was the packaging that did it, but there's something that smells almost like dill - if you wear it, the dill smell wears off quite quickly, but it was frankly a bit off putting. I find that the more I wear it, the more I like it, but it is very unusual
I am one of many who ordered Santal 33 based on a Jezebel post (http://bit.ly/1LKrdSH) about random strangers approaching the wearer of this fragrance, and when I received it, it did not disappoint. I'm madly in love with this scent. I hadn't previously experienced a scent that embodies the masculine and feminine equally, but this one does. My only complaint is that it is not so long-lasting on me. Which is fine, I suppose - I don't want to overdo it anyway. I just wear it to bed to make sure I can always smell it on myself.
...of a green salad of cuminy-spiced vinegary cucumbers (spicy hot pickles??) and powdery white Tahitian flowers. Maybe that doesn't sound appetizing, but that is the exact picture in my mind of how this smells. Nevermind that this is way off from what the true salad of notes are in this concoction. It's all about skin chemistry after all. I have to say, it's really not bad, surprisingly. It's certainly different. I'm sure that spicy fresh green-ness comes from a particularly green sandalwood (hence the "Santal" domination of name), Mixed with the warmth of the skin of the wearer, I can see how it could elicit questions of "Wow, what is that?" I still need to wear this more to make the final determination of this is "me" at all. Maybe it's a "sometimes me" (and that would be okay). But I'll tell you: I'm done with smelling pretty and safe anymore. No more bland sugary concoctions that were blended to offend absolutely no one. Give me Santal 33 and I stand out like a Monarch among the moths!
This fragrance frankly smells like a man's aftershave, on me anyway. I had high hopes for it, based on all the buzz, but it did not wow me at all. In fact after a few hours it smelled like plain old hippie patchouli on me which I'm not fond of. It's musky and just isn't the kind of scent that I like wearing.
(Disclaimer- I had a baby recently so nothing really smells good other than baby scent. And my scent is off because of pregnancy and baby) I did not like this scent at all. It smells like deep woods deer to me. I gave it 3 stars because i'm sure it does work for some. It is very strong. Opening the package was a small slap in the face. Its very gender neutral, not flowery at all.
This is a high quality fragrance that is unique. It has a note in it that, on me, reads as CK ONE. But 33 is so much more sophisticated than that simple department store offering. I don't know if I am in love, but I'm definitely interested.
I loved this scent when I purchased Omnia 10 years ago, and I love this scent now. Am I totally off on this? Anyway, smells just gorgeous!
I LOVED this on someone and asked her what it was. When I got my sample it didn't smell like hers, at all. I assume this is due to body chemistry but it was so very 'off'. Either way, I will not be wearing it any longer. It did last a long time though.
I adore this scent. Unfortunately, for some reason it is not as long lasting on me as I would like. I have never had any complaints that this scent is too strong, however I tend to go very light on application as I am sensitive myself. Living in FL one is frequently overwhelmed by the overwhelmingly cloying scents that some women of a "certain age" are fond of bathing in. Being a senior citizen myself, I feel I have earned the right to comment.
One of my favorites. I get compliments a lot when I wear this but do get the occasional, "eeeewww you smell like a pine tree" . It is strong and this scent lasts so no need to wear too much. I love it
Le Labo's Rose 31 seems to steal all the thunder from other worthy contenders in the brand's peculiar lineup. I have never smelled anything like Santal 33. It's not a sandalwood scent. No, it's too loud for the mellow, milky smell of sandalwood. It oscillates between something that is like juicy peppered rosewood and deep leathery amber. It's fairly linear too; so what you smell out of the bottle is what's going to be on your skin 16+ hours later.
