Description
Cafe Chantant is a floral woody musk that launched in 2013. Created by Mathieu Nardin, it features top notes of sour cherry, star anise and laurels; middle notes of heliotrope and iris; and base notes of vanilla, benzoin, musk and patchouli. The "Singing Cafés" of the Belle Époque were renowned venues of theatre, song and drink that played a major role in the revitalization of Paris in the late 19th century. With Café Chantant, Nobile 1942 pays tribute to the unique atmosphere of the Singing Café, from the elegant chypres worn by fashionable ladies, to the rich tobacco smoke of their gentleman companions, and even the delicacies on the tables and in the cocktail glasses, for a fragrance of rich, creamy, aromatic depth.
It opens with a juicy burst of sweet black cherry and mouthwatering spice, immediately enveloping us in a world of heady liquors and exotic delights. A powdery floral heart of heliotrope and iris recalls the exquisite cosmetics and larger than life fragrances of years past, while a base of deeply creamy vanilla and rich, musky patchouli and benzoin swoons with an atmosphere both sultry and gourmand. The overall effect is complex, evocative and dreamlike, a window into an incomparably glamorous past. Cafe Chantant is an eau de parfum, edp.
NOBILE 1942 CAFE CHANTANT REVIEWS
Fragrantica: "I'm currently on a sort of heliotrope journey, and this caught my eye. Such a delicious scent. I definitely do get the sort of play-dough thing others mention, but I'm actually a fan of that. Yummy powdery heliotrope and vanilla, but not overwhelmingly sweet. And I can still detect this on me by the end of the day--lasts surprisingly long for its lightness."
Fragrantica: "I'm in love with this! I don't get any cherry at all, which is ok to me. What this smells like, imo, is an almond Danish, fresh from the bakery. It literally makes my mouth water. It's not crazy strong, which again, is fine. I feel like if it were a more powerful fragrance, I'd get sick of it. I'm not a fan of strong gourmand fragrances. It does last a while, though. I think this would be better in the Spring and Fall, but really, it works anytime. Perhaps not the hottest summer days because it could get cloying. I originally purchased the 0.5oz bottle and plan to get the full-size."
Fragrantica: "Well damn. I have been obsessing and saving up for a bottle of Cuir Beluga for months and had seen this as a dupe and thought there’s no way they smell similar, they have different notes, they’re probably just slightly reminiscent of each other. Tested this today and thought oh, this is Cuir Beluga with cherries. It’s absolutely delightful, very sweet and powdery but does not smell like food, it’s clean, cozy, and put-together, mature and elegant but not old fashioned. I’m stubborn enough to keep saving up for Cuir Beluga only because I have had my heart set on it for a while, and I do prefer the lack of cherry in that one, but this is such a fantastic alternative. Lasts really long and projects nicely too, overall super impressive."
Fragrantica: "This opens with a big powdery dose of heliotrope (which i love) followed by cherry, vanilla, benzoin and iris. Sweet, almondy and cozy with a lipsticky note from iris, I think. This is almost borderline too sweet for me, but the iris and heliotrope help it, I think. I love powdery scents so that part is a-ok with me. Come to think of it, it's a lot like cherry chapstick. I get the Cuir Beluga thing too. Glad I got to try this cozy and fun perfume."
Fragrantica: "At first I thought this was a powerhouse vanilla-amaretto with very little else to recommend it, but it is actually quite strange and lovely in the drydown. More delicate and blended than I gave it credit for. The heliotrope note is a star here. I haven’t worn this yet, but I can see it being a big compliment-getter. It’s more winter-spring than autumn-winter for me. Really lovely, comforting, warm yet fresh fragrance."
Fragrantica: "I've had this on my 'Must Try' list for ages, and finally got to sniff it yesterday. I was delighted to discover that it is indeed, as reported by Fragrantica reviewers, very similar to both Cuir Beluga by Guerlain, and also to Vanille by Reminiscence, one of my favourites. If you have any of these three, you don't need the others. They are all light, airy, calm, and sophisticated vanillas, sweet yet not at all gourmand. Angelic. I feel elegant and composed wearing this type of vanilla. I don't pick up the cherry in Café Chantant, (to be fair, my nose was frozen from the London weather so take that with a pinch of salt) but the powdery vanilla is lightly dusted with fine almond from the heliotrope, not too much, just a trace. It's very lovely, a perfume that transcends seasons."
Fragrantica: "Originality: 7/10 (well-composed but reminiscent of other gourmand scents) Quality of Scent: 7/10 (rich, balanced) Longevity: 9/10 (long-lasting, great for extended wear) Versatility: 7/10 (best for fall/winter and evening wear, less suited for summer) Performance: 8/10 (strong projection and great longevity) Bottle Design: 8/10 (elegant and fitting for the fragrance’s character) Price: 5/10 (ok for the quality but not groundbreaking) Overall: 7.5/10. A luscious and elegant gourmand fragrance that wraps you in warmth and sophistication. While not the most original, Cafe Chantant is a treat for lovers of sweet, smoky, and resinous scents. Perfect for cozy evenings and special occasions."
Fragrantica: "Utterly divine - very similar to Guerlain Cuir Beluga but with a delicious juicy cherry note that lasts until the drydown. Not medicinal - the kind of cherry you'd put in a pastry. Oof. Sweet, soft, powdery, vanilla cozy heaven. I'm a patchouli-phobe and I don't sense it here. Just beautiful!"
Fragrantica: "This one surprised me, as I was expecting a gourmand vanilla cherry cupcake - instead I got a powdery licorice cherry candy. To me, Café Chantant smells like tincture and incense in the opening. Like something a bohemian doctor might prescribe. As Café Chantant dries down it becomes powdery, the heliotrope and iris mixes with the cherry licorice candy. Laurel and patchouli keeps it from becoming to sweet, yet it’s far from the mossy patchouli-licorice found in the Lolita Lempicka line. Some type of rice or wheat sweetness is present in the late drydown. It’s powdery but not soapy, and I havn’t yet found a cherry/licorice fragrance that competes. Cafe Chantant has that lovely vintage powder vibe that I’ve been looking for, and it’s my favorite fragrance for when I want to smell like a sweet licorice snack."
