Fuel 0987 is a leather fragrance that launched in 2023. Created by Andreas Wilhelm, it features top notes of agarwood (oud), gasoline, tar and jatamansi (nard); middle notes of gasoline, tolu balsam and caramel; and base notes of leather, styrax, labdanum and tar. Fuel 0987 reminds us that we are racing at full speed into the abyss because we cannot do without petrochemical products and still waste these resources at the eleventh hour. The journey starts with old gold from the Middle East (petroleum) and ends with new gold (oud). It is an eau de parfum, edp.
Fragrantica: There’s something about FUEL 0987 that sets it apart from the rest. Perhaps it’s my profound respect for Andreas Wilhelm, its creator, and the innovative open-formula project that distinguishes it. Or maybe it’s the way it defies traditional notions of scent, daring to embrace a facade while concealing a soul within. Despite its seemingly nihilistic philosophy, FUEL 0987 reveals a romantic core, a poignant blend of loneliness and nostalgia. It’s a scent that transports you, evoking memories of both childhood innocence and the uncertainties of the future. In its undaunted layers (see above the description for the notes), I found a reflection of my own journey: a coming and going between past and present, childhood and adulthood, pretending not to believe in the present for fear of being forced to stop. Trust me, FUEL 0987 may defy conventional expectations, but its unique aroma is simply irresistible. It’s a fragrance that lingers in the mind long after the initial encounter, inviting contemplation and exploration with each inhale.
Fragrantica: Got this as a gift after falling in love with it. It reminds me of my fathers garage, very mechanicy but also wearable. Sometimes layering it with a rose scent to make it a bit less intimidating. It can "stink" to some people, because it is gasoline/tar forward.
Fragrantica: This one has been sitting on my skin for a while and I keep getting whiffs of it. I think it's really hitting hard with the coal tar note and a bit of gas. It is also reminiscent of a freshly paved road that hasn't dreid yet, so you can still smell it. I like this one better than I thought I would. If you do like the smell of gasoline or coal tar, you probably can't find another perfume that has more prominent notes than this one. It's a bit strange, but I can't stop smelling this!
Fragrantica: 100% unapologetic gasoline note in the opening won me over immediately, because I am forever a fan of unconventional notes in perfumery and one of those weirdos that actually likes the smell of gasoline. But for those of you who may be a bit skittish, fear not, because just as quickly as it comes on, it transitions quite surprisingly into a very pleasant orris-soft amber. And there is a minerality that reminds me of crushed patio rock that runs pretty consistently through the life of the fragrance that I find quite comforting. All and all, a unique, intriguing and approachable journey.
