The Different Company is a French perfume shop based in Paris.  Jean-Claude Ellena (currently Hermes’ in-house perfumer) and Thierry de Baschmakoff collaborated to form this company in 2000.  Perfumers who have created fragrances for this line are Celine Ellena (Jean-Claude’s daughter), Emilie Coppermann and Bertrand Duchaufour.

The Different Company’s philosophy was to be just that, different from other perfume companies, create unique fragrances with the best raw materials.

Their original perfumes were Osmanthus, Rose Poivree, Divine Bergamot and Bois d’Iris.  Since 2000, they have added Jasmin de Nuit (created by Celine Ellena, who took over Jean-Claude’s position when he left for Hermes in 2004), parfum d’Ailleurs & fleurs, parfum de Charmes & Feuilles, Parfum des Sens & Bois, Sel de Vetiver (salty beauty), Sublime Balkiss, de Bachmakov, Oriental Lounge Pure Virgin (now d’Eve) Oud Shamash, Oud for Love (Bertrand di the two Ouds), and four L’Esprit Cologne scents.

Three fragrances from the line are the best-known.  Bois d’Iris is the perfect woody iris.  It sparkles with notes of iris, bergamot, geranium, ylang, coriander, cedar, leather and vetiver.  Jasmin de Nuit is a unique rendition of jasmine with notes of anise, bergamot, mandarin orange, jasmine, cinnamon, cardamom, sandalwood, amber and patchouli.  Sel de Vetiver is salty vetiver gorgeousness with notes of grapefruit, cardamom, bergamot, Tahitian vetiver, bourbon geranium, ylang, iris, bourbon vetiver and sea salt.

The two oud scents were created in 2012 by Bertrand Duchaufour as an intense set of perfumes called Collection Excessive.  Oud for Love has notes of angelica, saffron, coriander, caraway, aldehydes, whiskey, iris, ylang, tuberose, sandalwood, cloves, vetiver, musk, immortelle, amber, tolu balsam, heliotrope, castoreum, agarwood (oud) and caramel. Oud Shamash has notes of artemesia, saffron, cinnamon, pink pepper, rum, rose, cypriol oil, nagarmotha, French labdanum, sandalwood, amber, agarwood (oud), woods, patchouli, leather, musk vanille and tolu balsam.

The Different Company has exceeded their mission. They are different; their fragrances are unique, beautifully rendered with quality raw materials.
