Diptyque was launched in Paris in 1961 on 34 Boulevard Saint Germain. Three artists - Yves Coueslant, Christiane Gautrot, Desmond Knox-Leet - joined their talents and passion for design and art together and showcased their fabrics and other unusual items they found in their travels in their small shop in Paris. As a part of their home accessory items, they created fragranced candles for their customers to buy and enjoy in their homes. Those customers really liked those candles, and they told their friends, and they told their friends, and those candles became very popular. They expanded the candle line and eventually moved the company in the direction of perfume.
Diptyque in 1968 created their first fragrance, L'eau, with notes of cinnamon, rose, clove geranium and sandalwood. Many other scents followed over the years, and some of the most popular and best-selling in the Diptyque line are Philosykos (notes of fig tree wood, fig leaf, fig sap, white cedar) a gorgeous fig fragrance hailed by most in the perfume community as one of the best fig fragrances and Tam Dao, a heavily sandalwood fragrance based on one of the owner's travels to Indochine. All of the Diptyque perfumes are based on the travels of the company's founders.
Diptyque has created an interesting line of fragrances, as well as candles and other products that are fresh, unique, with a distinctly Parisian flare. This small Paris company has grown, and its products are now sold all over the world.
